K-9 dog had his spleen removed after an emergency surgery Wednesday in order to sustain his life, authorities said.

Assistant Chief Joe Hanna said that the Allentown police dog- Falko will undergo more examination as he recovers at Valley Central Veterinary Referral Center in Whitehall, where doctors performed the operation.

Hanna said officer Lief Henry, “hemorrhaging was discovered in Falko at by veterinarian, when Falko’s handler noticed the dog wasn’t acting like himself and appeared lethargic Tuesday night and took him to the vets”.

Hanna said the emergency procedure required doctors to remove Falko’s spleen. He said the initial surgery was successful and Falko is recovering. He said further testing will determine whether Falko will continue as a police dog.

Hospital officials are performing all medical and surgical care for Falko at no charge to police.

Falko, who has been with the department since 2003, has made several arrests in recent years. This summer, he chased down and caught an armed man in east Allentown. Also, he chased down a hit-and-run suspect, bit when the suspect failed to comply two years ago.
