A 4 years old dog in Germany gave birth to 17 Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies and all were healthy.

The owner of the four-year-old dog has to feed the puppies five times a day for the first four weeks because Etana doesn’t have enough milk.

These puppies are said to be Etana’s second litter. She previously nurtured a litter of eight, but this litter is unusual in that all the puppies were born naturally with no need of a C-section and all of them survived.

You’re running along your usual route and you’re about to reach your 8th mile. Your partner is keeping pace with you, looking as fresh as when he started. He’s been there for you for years, helping you train and condition for your marathons.

Loyal to a fault, you promise yourself to buy him a drink and a steak to thank him for all his hard work. As you cross the 8th mile, you pause for a break. That’s when your partner walks up to you and…licks your face.

Your partner is a running dog!

If this is your situation, or your desired situation, then here are seven breeds you can rely on as training partners for an active outdoor lifestyle.

Schipperke

If water sports is your activity of choice, then you can’t go wrong with a Schipperke. They love the water and make perfecting boating companions. They are quite intelligent and will pick up training easily, but you must be consistent, otherwise they have a tendancy to become stubborn. The fact that they’re light also makes them great for the water, as they literally wont rock the boat (think of a Great Dane trying to get on skiff…yikes!).

Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever

Think of this breed as a sub-compact golden retriever. This makes them great for most environments. They’re very sociable and friendly, and are excellent swimmers. They need lots of exercise to keep them in good shape so they may not be the best for the casual jogger or outdoorsman. These retriever’s were bred to hunt, so they lovenothing better than getting in the woods and loping down trails. They also love retrieving (obviously),so catch and Frisbee are other options if long runs are not your speciality.

Border Collie

Commonly used as a rescue dog, this British herding dog is a fine choice for the woods. They are also very popular in dog shows as they have great agility and jumping height. Only consider this dog if you plan on doing lots of varied activity, as they can actually get bored easily. So if you run, swim, hike, off-road, and mountain bike, this may be the breed for you.

Viszla

Viszla are beautiful creatures with a distinctly European origin. They have sleek rust colored coats and the build of a greyhound. The distinctive name comes from a dark raised ridge along the top of the spine, known as a “crown.” They are originally pointing and retrieving dogs, but they have great endurance and energy for any running/hiking activities. They are attentive and stay close to their owners (a common nickname given to them is “Velcro Dogs”). This is one of the few breeds of mid-size dog that do not develop Hip Dysplasia, a form of joint arthritis. They have a lifespan of 12-14 years.

Boykin Spaniel

These originated in the South as a gun hunting dog. They have an incredible amount of endurance and are extremely family friendly. Their coats have to be maintained short, as they’re magnets for trail flotsam and briars. Some owners suggest spraying them with cooking spray if you’re taking your Boykin into the woods. In terms of health, it’s very important you only train adult spaniels for running or long distance hikes, as they have a high occurrence of hip dysphasia and you want to make sure they’re full grown before placing and stress on their joints. For water activities, they’re naturals and can ride in small boats or enjoy a fun day at the beach.

Doberman

Carved into our collective consciousness as guard dogs or police dogs, Dobermans make a great choice for women. Because of their aggressive appearance and stance, with a Doberman, you’ll feel more secure about running at night. Dobermans are intelligent and highly protective, so you’ll want to train them young to get them used to strangers. Despite their reputation, these dogs are very loving and make wonderful companions, both indoors and outdoors.

English Setter

This is another breed well suited to the aquatic environment. Visually, they have the build of a golden retriever with the coloring of a Dalmatian (i.e. black and white spots). They’re high energy and great for most environments. They have a moderate running endurance as compared to Viszla, but a great all around breed if you split your time between beach and trail.

*Thanks to Guideposts for this great article by John: John is an outdoor enthusiast who especially enjoys running with his dog whenever he has the chance. He is also an Operation Freedom War veteran and a manager for Airsplat, the nation’s largest retailer of Airsoft guns including Spring Airsoft Rifles.

The reason for the incident in Rice Military is unclear to why Qien Feng who was charged with animal cruelty had wanted to poison his neighbor’s dogs. The same incident happened in the neighborhood in July when Charlotte Liberda’s dogs were poisoned but they eventually survived.

Due to what happened in July, Liberda installed surveillance cameras around her house. Qien Feng was caught on those surveillance units when he was throwing those tainted cheese balls over Liberda’s fence in an attempt to kill the dogs.

The Central California SPCA hopes reduction of adoption rates will encourage more people to adopt animals.

The society is planning to lower the cost of adoption as there are plenty of kittens and puppies available for adoption.

The SPCA said they were able to lower their adoption prices thanks to a generous donor.

To adopt an animal will cost between $25 and $40 depending on if it needs to be spayed or neutered.

Currently, it will cost between $50 and $120 to add a puppy or dog to a family. These prices are expected be in effect through the end of the year.

Police spokesman confirmed that no charge will be considered against anybody as it seems obvious that the dog loosed free from its crate inside the house and was trying to find it way out of the house through the window.

A long-haired chihuahua has passed a search and rescue test in Japan. The Japan’s newest police dog called Momo was one of 32 successful candidates out of 70 dogs to pass the test by finding a person in five minutes after merely sniffing their cap.

Nara police spokesman said, “Any breed of dog can be entered to become a police dog in the search and rescue division but it was quite unusual for such an animal like Chihuahua to meet that expectation”.

The seven-year-old Momo is set to be used for rescue operations in case of disasters such as earthquakes, becuase her tiny body can fit into place too narrow as this is advantage over other rescue dogs.
